Sthala varalaru: the temple's story
Thiruvaikavur is a small village between two rivers, the Kollidam to its north and the Manniyar to its south. There is no tall gopuram, just an east-facing entrance topped by five kalasams with Vinayaka in front. The first surprise comes inside: the Nandi does not face the Lord but turns to face you. The inner doorway tells the hunter's story in stucco figures. In the sanctum is the self-born Vilvavaneswarar, and beside him, side by side like a bridal couple, the goddess Valaikkai Nayagi, also called Sarvajana Rakshaki.
The village's story is bound up with a bilva tree. The temple legend goes like this. When the great deluge came, the Vedas feared they too would perish and begged Shiva for shelter; he told them to stand here as bilva trees and do penance, and so the place was Vilvaranyam. Long after, while the sage Thavanidhi sat in penance here, a deer ran up and took refuge with him. The hunter chasing it demanded the animal, the sage refused, and the enraged hunter went for the sage himself. Shiva leapt at him in the form of a tiger. Terrified, the hunter scrambled up a bilva tree, and the tiger would not leave its foot. All night, afraid he would doze off and fall, the hunter plucked leaf after leaf and let them drop, and every one landed on Shiva in his tiger form. That night was Maha Shivaratri. Hungry, sleepless and without knowing it, he had worshipped all night, and Shiva appeared and granted him liberation.
At dawn, the day the hunter's life was due to end, Yama came with his noose. Nandi held him back with his breath, and Shiva, as Dakshinamurthy, came with a staff in hand and drove him out. Yama saw his mistake, surrendered, and dug a tank in front of the temple before he left: the Yama Theertham. All the Nandis here face the entrance to keep him from coming back, and the village is proud to be the place where the Shivaratri vigil began. Because Yama himself was turned back here, people also come to pray to be free of the fear of death.
Things to look for: Dakshinamurthy standing with a staff, a form seen nowhere else. Vishnu and Brahma stand guard on either side of the ardha mandapam door, which is why the temple is called a shrine of the Trinity. The goddess's shrine has no female doorkeepers; Vinayaka guards it on both sides. The six-faced Murugan, carved in one stone with his peacock and arch, shows every fingernail and palm line, and his peacock turns to the left rather than the right. There is no Navagraha shrine here, and there is a shrine to the Saptha Kanniyar. The tanks are the Yama Theertham and the Agni Theertham, and the sacred tree is the bilva.

Meaning: He made the towering Meru his bow, a serpent its string and fire its arrow, and with them reduced the three fair cities of his enemies to ash. The place this Vikirthan loves is Vaika (today's Thiruvaikavur): in every pond around its fields, bees slip into the great lotuses to play and hum their music, and in its groves lovely cuckoos call.
History and architecture
By the 7th century all three Thevaram poets, Sambandar, Appar and Sundarar, had sung the Lord of Thiruvaikavur, and later Arunagirinathar praised its Murugan in the Thiruppugazh. When the first shrine was built is not known; Kulothunga Chola I rebuilt it in granite in the late 11th or early 12th century. The Dravidian-style temple, enclosed by a granite wall, is run by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE Department.
