Sthala varalaru: the temple's story

The temple stands in the middle of Mayiladuthurai, about a kilometre south of the Kaveri and 2 km from the railway junction. A nine-tiered rajagopuram, around 59 metres high, faces east, and behind it the complex runs 719 feet by 520 feet, with five prakarams. In the sanctum Mayuranathar is a self-formed lingam under a three-tiered (tridala) vimana. The Goddess, Abhayambika, holds a parrot in her right hand; her name, "she who gives refuge", comes from the peacock she sheltered, and Anjalnayaki is the same name in Tamil.

The temple legend goes like this. Daksha held a great sacrifice and left Shiva out. Shiva asked Parvati not to go, but she went anyway, hoping to set her father right, and was insulted. Shiva, as Veerabhadra, smashed the sacrifice, and in the chaos a peacock brought for the rites ran to hide at the Goddess's feet. For disobeying him, Shiva told her she too would be born a peahen. As a peahen she wandered the earth, worshipping the lingam at shrine after shrine from Mylapore onwards, and at last did hard penance here on the Kaveri. Moved, Shiva came to her as a peacock and danced, the Mayura Thandavam or Gauri Thandavam. The curse lifted, she took back her own form, and the Lord who came as a peacock became Mayuranathar.

The river has its own story. The sage Kanva, at his penance in Kashi, saw that the Ganga, the Yamuna and the Saraswati had grown foul with the sins people washed into them. He told them to go to Mayiladuthurai in Aippasi and bathe in the Kaveri, and they were cleansed. So for all thirty days of Aippasi people bathe here in the Tula Snanam, and the Lord comes down to the bathing ghat each day. In midstream stands a Nandi, marking the place where Shiva humbled the bull's pride; that stretch is the Idaba Theertham. The last day of the month is Kadai Muzhukku, the final dip.

The first day of Karthigai has a story too. A couple from Vriddhachalam, Natha Sarma and Anavidyambikai, set out for the Tula bath but arrived after Aippasi had ended. Heartbroken, they lay down on the riverbank, and the Lord appeared in their dream: bathe before sunrise tomorrow, he said, and you will have the full merit. Because he held time back for them, the day is Mudavan Muzhukku. The pair later merged with the Lord. A west-facing lingam bears Natha Sarma's name, and the Anavidyambikai lingam beside the Goddess's shrine is always dressed in a red sari.

There is a great deal to see on the way round. Adi Mayuranathar has a shrine in the prakaram, with the Goddess as a peahen worshipping him. Nataraja has his own shrine in the Gauri Thandava pose and receives the first puja every evening; opposite him, in the Mayilamman shrine, the Lord and the Goddess both appear as peafowl. In most Shiva temples Murugan takes his Vel from his mother during Kanda Sashti, but here he receives it from his father. In the Navagraha shrine Shani appears as Jwala Shani, with a flame on his head, beside a second Shani seated on his crow, facing north and worshipping a lingam, a pairing rarely found anywhere else. The banyan carved above the Dakshinamurti niche holds two peacocks and monkeys. Durga stands on Mahisha with a demon on either side, and there are shrines to the Sandana Vinayakar worshipped by Agastya, to Kanakkadi Vinayakar, the keeper of accounts, and to the Siddha Kudhambai, who attained liberation here. Aadi Pooram Amman has her own shrine as Veera Shakti. The temple holds sixteen lingams, and walking round it sixteen times on a full moon day is held to equal the Girivalam at Tiruvannamalai.

Sambandar, coming over from the Thiruvilanagar temple on the north bank, once found the Kaveri in flood between him and Mayuranathar. He sang a hymn asking for a way across, the water fell, and he crossed to worship here.

On the Kaveri, this is one of six towns honoured as equal to Kashi, with Thiruvaiyaru, Thiruvidaimarudur, Thiruvenkadu, Sayavanam and Srivanchiyam. The sacred trees are the mango and the vanni.

History and architecture

Sambandar and Appar sang to Mayuranathar in the 7th century; Sambandar's hymns are in the first and third Thirumurai and Appar's in the fifth. The temple was then built of brick. In the 10th century, under Uttama Chola (971-975), Sembiyan Mahadevi rebuilt it in stone, and the niche sculptures of her time are still in place: Ganapati, Nataraja, Alinganamurti and Dakshinamurti on the south, Lingodbhava on the west, and Brahma, Gangavisarjanamurti, Durga and Bhikshatana on the north. The earliest inscription, from the 14th year of Kulothunga I, lies on the floor before the sanctum and records a tax-free gift of land yielding 300 kalams of paddy a year. Kulothunga III's reign added many gifts of land and money. In 1229, the 14th year of Rajaraja III, a separate shrine was built for Abhayambika, and land was given for the early-morning offering. After the Cholas, Pandya kings from Maravarman Sundara Pandya I onwards gave land and paddy. Arunagirinathar sang the temple's Murugan in the Thiruppugazh in the 14th century, and after the Delhi Sultanate raids the Vijayanagara rulers repaired the temple. Between 1907 and 1927 the Chettiars of Devakottai carried out a major renovation, which altered some old structures and inscriptions but kept the Sembiyan Mahadevi sculptures. In May 1927 the Self-Respect Movement organised a temple entry for Dalits here. Today the temple is administered by the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam.

Parikaram

People who feel they have done wrong without meaning to bathe in the Kaveri and pray to Mayuranathar for peace of mind, and dance students in particular pray to the Lord of the peacock dance. Those troubled by Sani dosham worship Jwala Shani. When a prayer is answered, the custom is to bathe the Lord and the Goddess in abhishekam and offer new cloth. These are devotional practices and no result is promised.
