Sthala varalaru: the temple's story
Rameswaram island lies in the sea shaped like the conch in Vishnu's hand. Cross the Pamban bridge onto it and the temple's high walls rise from the middle of town. A few steps from the eastern gate is the sea itself: Agni Theertham. The outer wall runs 865 feet east to west and 657 feet north to south, with great gopurams to the east and west, the main one 53 metres high. Inside, Ramanathaswamy and the goddess Parvathavardhini have separate shrines with a corridor between them. The sanctum holds two lingams, the Ramalingam, which is the main deity, and the Vishvalingam beside it. There are also shrines to Vishalakshi, Ganesha and Vishnu.
The temple legend goes like this. After his victory over Ravana, Rama carried the sin of having killed a Brahmin. On the sage Agastya's advice he came to this shore with Sita and Lakshmana to worship Shiva, fixed an auspicious hour and sent Hanuman to Kailash for a lingam. The hour drew near and Hanuman had not returned, so Sita shaped a lingam out of beach sand, and Rama installed and worshipped it: the Ramalingam. Hanuman arrived after the rite, angry that his lingam would go unused, and tried to pull the sand lingam up. He could not move it. Rama installed Hanuman's lingam, the Vishvalingam, beside the first and ruled that it should be worshipped first, as it still is. The sea took its name when Agni, god of fire, bathed here to cleanse himself after touching Sita in her ordeal by fire. And so that Rama's sin would touch no one else, Shiva sent Bhairava, who pressed it down into the underworld with his toe.
Shiva and Vishnu share this temple. Lakshmi had been born as the daughter of King Sundara Pandya, and when Vishnu came disguised as a young man to ask for her hand, the king had him chained. That night a dream showed the king who the suitor was. In memory of it, Sethu Madhavar here wears chains on his feet. Ranganatha, installed by Rama's ally Vibhishana, has a shrine of his own too.
The corridors are the temple's glory. Raised on platforms more than five feet high and lined with columns on both sides, the outer corridor is the longest of any temple in the world. It alone has about 1,212 pillars, each some thirty feet tall and most carved with their own figures, and all the corridors together run to 3,850 feet. Where the western third corridor meets the path to the Sethu Madhavar shrine, the floor is laid out like a chessboard: this is the Chokkattan Mandapam.
Bathing is the heart of the pilgrimage. Of the sixty-four sacred waters on the island, twenty-two lie within the temple walls as ponds and wells, one for each arrow Rama carried. Pilgrims first plunge into the sea at Agni Theertham, then go from one theertham to the next inside.
With Badrinath in the north, Puri in the east and Dwarka in the west, Rameswaram in the south completes the Char Dham, and the Kasi-Rameswaram pilgrimage starts here, so pilgrims from North India are a daily sight. Sambandar and Appar sang this shrine in the Thevaram.

Meaning: He keeps the wave-tossed Ganga and the cool crescent moon side by side in his matted hair; he is the First One, who holds Uma close as one half of himself, and he is the ascetic Sage. At Rameswaram, ringed by seaside groves where long-leaved screwpines flourish and bloom, he sits and rules, wearing a fine garland of skulls, sings Sambandar. The place is called Rameswaram because Rama worshipped Shiva here.
History and architecture
The shrine began as a thatched shed, and the great temple of today was built by many hands over many centuries. The Pandyas enlarged it in the 12th century, when the Sri Lankan king Parakramabahu I (1153-1186) also took part in work on the sanctum and Nissanka Malla sent gifts and workmen. Early in the 14th century Malik Kafur, general of the Delhi Sultanate, raided the island. Later the Jaffna king Jeyaveera Cinkaiariyan (1380-1410) shipped stone from Koneswaram at Trincomalee to renew the sanctum, and his successor Gunaveera Cinkaiariyan served as a trustee overseeing its building. In the early 1500s the Vijayanagara kings added the Virabhadra columns, the god shown with sword and horn.
Most of what stands now rose from the 17th century under the Sethupathis of Ramanathapuram. Dalavai Sethupathi built part of the eastern gopuram. Muthuramalinga Sethupathi, who ruled from 1763 to 1795, raised the famous third corridor, the Chokkattan Mandapam, completed by his chief minister Muthirulappa Pillai; statues of the king and his two ministers stand at the western entrance to that corridor. Between 1745 and 1837 the Maratha kings of Thanjavur built rest houses along the pilgrim route and gave them to the temple. Today the temple covers about fifteen acres, is run by the HR&CE Department of Tamil Nadu and serves free meals to devotees.

For generations, families have come to Rameswaram to perform rites for their ancestors. From before dawn, families gather on the shore at Agni Theertham and, guided by priests, offer balls of rice and sesame (pinda tharpanam). Then they bathe in the sea and in all 22 theerthams of the temple before worshipping the Lord and the goddess. Many also give clothes, food or even a cow in charity, as they can afford. Every new moon draws pilgrims, and Thai Amavasai, Aadi Amavasai and Mahalaya Amavasai in Purattasi bring them in lakhs. Devotees also worship the temple's Bhairava to be rid of past wrongs. These are practices of faith, and no result is promised.
