Sthala varalaru: the temple's story

Five kilometres out of Tenkasi, under the roar of the main falls, the temple sits in thick green surroundings. Seen from above it has the shape of a conch, and so it is also called the Sangu Koil. In the sanctum is Kutralanathar as a lingam; the goddess is Kuzhalvaimozhi Ammai. Her shrine stands where the conch curls, with barely room for one person to squeeze between its wall and the outer wall.

The temple legend goes like this. When the three worlds crowded into the Himalaya for the wedding of Shiva and Parvati, the north of the earth sank and the south rose. Only the tiny sage Agastya could balance that weight, so Shiva sent him south. At the Pothigai hills Agastya found a Vishnu temple, and the guards turned him away for his sacred ash and rudraksha. He worshipped Murugan at nearby Ilanji, came back dressed as a Vaishnava, and was welcomed in as a teacher. Step by step, as he walked toward the image, it changed: a deer took the place of the conch, a crescent moon the place of the tulsi, a serpent the place of the jewels, and on the brow a third eye opened. Saying "kuru, kuru", Agastya pressed down on the image's head; it sank into the earth until only the crown remained, and the crown became the lingam of Kutralanathar. At once Shiva and Parvati appeared to Agastya and his wife Lopamudra in their wedding dress, and so the Lord is also Manakkola Nathar, "Lord in bridal form". The marks of Agastya's fingers are still seen on the lingam.

That pressing gave the Lord a headache, and to ease it Agastya applied a paste of 64 herbs with milk, tender coconut and sandal. The custom continues: every night the herbal paste is applied and then given out as prasadam, and the Maha Chandanadhi oil used in the abhishekam is sold at the temple office. Devotees feel Agastya still comes to worship every night, and the two door guardians before the sanctum are carved as if asking each other whether the sage has arrived yet.

There is a Mahabharata thread too. Arjuna, having lost the lingam he carried for worship at Kashi, got it back after praying at Kutralam. That is why the Lord here is "Thulaintha Porul Tharum Nayakar", the giver-back of lost things.

The temple has five entrances, four for the four Vedas and a fifth for Pilavendhan, who came to watch Shiva dance. North of the sanctum is the Parasakthi shrine, the Dharani Peetam, counted among the 64 Shakti Peethams. The old shrines of Vishnu's consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi became those of Kuzhalvaimozhi Ammai and Parasakthi. In the Murugan shrine Valli and Deivanai face each other. The temple also owns five chariots, which is unusual.

Across the road, north of the temple and facing the tank, is the Chitra Sabha, where Shiva danced the Tripura Thandavam. It has a copper-plated roof, and inside, its walls are covered with scenes from the puranas and epics painted in herbal dyes; jewelled dancing girls in stone greet you on either side of the entrance. At festival time Nataraja is brought from here to the temple.

The sacred tree is the kurumpala, an old name for the place itself, and Sambandar sings of the Lord as Kurumpalaveesar. The holy waters are the Chitra Nadhi and the Vada Aruvi.

The Pothigai hills already appear in Sangam poetry. In that age Courtallam lay within the realm of the chieftain Aay Andiran, and the sacred tree was planted by the Chola king Kochengannan, so worship here reaches back to the Sangam period. In Pallava times Kapilar's Sivaperuman Thiruvanthathi praised the place and its Lord, and Sambandar sang two pathigams.

The first stone temple was raised by the early Pandyas in the 8th or 9th century. The temple holds 89 inscriptions. The oldest is a Pandya record in Vatteluttu script from 765-815 CE. Next come ten Vatteluttu inscriptions of Parantaka I Chola, styled "Parakesari who took Madurai"; this is the only temple in the Pandya country with his records. One fixes its date by a solar eclipse, and one calls the deity Thirukutrala Perumal, while later records name him Kutrala Devan and Mahadevan. They list gifts of gold, money, cows, sheep and buffaloes. Three inscriptions of Rajaraja I also survive, and the Chola destruction of the Chera fleet at Kandalur Salai is known from them. Seventy-five later Pandya records have been copied so far; under Maravarman Sundara Pandya II an assembly of 512 members met here.

Work on the Chitra Sabha began under Parakrama Pandya (1422-1483) and was finished under Udayamarthanda Varma. The murals you see today largely date from Nayak rule, and they were carefully touched up not long ago. The Nayaks added to the temple too, but there was no room for one of their great rajagopurams; the entrance is a two-tiered, east-facing salai gopuram over the Thirikoota Mandapam, where there is also an undated inscription about Ambala Vinayagar. Pattinathar and Arunagirinathar sang of Courtallam, and Thirikoodarasappa Kavirayar's Kutrala Kuravanji gave it a lasting place in Tamil literature. The temple is run by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.

Couples hoping to marry offer sandal paste (chandana kappu) to Manakkola Nathar. Since the Lord here gave Arjuna back what he had lost, people pray here to recover lost things, and devotees come for the removal of sins and the fulfilment of their prayers. The herbal prasadam from the night puja and the Chandanadhi oil are much sought after. These are devotional customs; for any illness, see a doctor.

Parikaram is a traditional practice of worship, not a promise of results. Confirm the details at the temple.
