Sthala varalaru: the temple's story
On the south bank of the Vettar river, behind a five-tiered east-facing rajagopuram, stands the Thirukarugavur temple, with the Ksheera Kundam, the milk pond, in front of it. In the second enclosure is the Lord, Mullaivananathar, and beside him, side by side, the shrine of the goddess Garbharakshambigai, with Murugan between the two. Father, mother and child in a row: this Somaskanda arrangement makes the temple feel especially close to couples praying for a baby. Karu means the unborn, ka to protect and ur a village, so the name itself means the place where the unborn was saved, and in Tamil the goddess is Karukaatha Nayaki.
The temple legend goes like this: this was once a forest thick with mullai, wild jasmine. The sages Gautama and Karkeya did penance here, served by a man named Nithuruvar, who with his wife Vedhigai grieved that they had no child. On the sages' advice the couple prayed to the Lord and Goddess of the jasmine forest, and Vedhigai conceived. One day, with her husband away, she lay unconscious from the strain of pregnancy when the sage Oordhvapaadar came to the door asking for alms. No answer came. Taking it as an insult, he cursed her, and she lost the child she was carrying. Vedhigai threw herself at the Goddess's feet. The Goddess rose as the protector of the womb, kept the lost embryo safe in a pot until its time was full, and placed a living baby, Naindhuruvan, in Vedhigai's arms. When the baby had no milk she sent Kamadhenu, and where the cow scratched the earth with her hoof milk welled up into a pond, the one in front of the temple today. Vedhigai then begged the Goddess to stay and guard every expectant mother and her unborn child, and she agreed; she has been Karukaatha Nayaki here ever since.
Mullaivananathar is a svayambu lingam of anthill earth, so he is never bathed; on the Pradosham days of the waxing moon only punugu, a civet-based paste, is applied. Even for the abhishekam with 1,008 conches on the Sundays of Karthigai, the lingam is first covered with a bowl. The scars of the jasmine creeper that once wound round it can still be seen. The Vinayaka and the Nandi here are also svayambu, though of stone. Behind the main shrine, where Lingodbhava normally appears, is Ardhanareeswara, and in the Navagraha shrine every planet faces the Sun. Between the Lord's and the Goddess's shrines is a well, the Sathyakoopam; the sacred mullai grows between the main shrine and the Chandikeswara shrine; and besides the milk pond there is a second tank, the Brahma Theertham, north-east of the temple.
Thirukarugavur is the first of the Pancha Aranya, the five forest temples round Kumbakonam, traditionally visited in a single day: Thirukarugavur (jasmine forest) at the dawn puja, Avalivanallur (padiri forest) in the morning, Haridwaramangalam (vanni forest) at midday, Alangudi (poolai forest) in the evening and Thirukollambudur (vilva forest) at the night puja. The whole circuit is only about 36 km.

Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukkarasar sang of this Lord in the 7th century, and it is one of the Thevaram shrines on the south bank of the Kaveri. Later it appears in Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam, in a work of Umapathi Sivam and in Ramalinga Adigal's Vinnappa Kalivenba. The temple holds 31 Chola-period inscriptions, running from kings styled Parakesari and Rajakesari to Rajaraja I, Rajendra I and Kulothunga. Ninth-century records on the vimana walls of the main and Nataraja shrines give land for festivals, lamps and food offerings and name the Lord Mullaivanamudaiyar. In the 20th year of Parantaka I a donor named Tiruchitrambala Udaiyar gave 13 veli of land for the temple's expenses, and in the 21st year Vilayanattu Devan gave one and a half veli for ghee lamps. Sorudai Chozhan Vizhupparaiyan presented jewels, puja vessels and musical instruments. The present temple, inside a granite wall about 460 by 284 feet, has a five-tiered rajagopuram, a three-tiered inner tower and a second entrance on the south. It is run by the HR&CE Department.

Everything about worship at Karugavur turns on motherhood. Young women whose marriage is delayed, and couples childless for years, smear the steps of the Goddess's shrine with ghee, draw a kolam there and offer archanai. Couples hoping for a child are given ghee blessed at the Goddess's feet, to be taken in small amounts for 48 nights in a row; the wife keeps it up even if the husband cannot. Expectant mothers receive castor oil blessed at her feet, which they take home to rub on the belly during labour. Devotees also light ghee lamps, one for Vinayaka, one for Mullaivananathar and nine for the Goddess, praying for ancestral obstacles to clear, and people with skin complaints offer punugu to the Lord on the Pradosham of the waxing moon. After the baby arrives, families return to tie a cradle at the shrine and give rice, fruit, jaggery or sugar candy equal to the child's weight as tulabharam. These are acts of faith: for conception, pregnancy, childbirth or skin trouble, your doctor's advice and care come first, and ask your doctor before using any oil or ghee given as prasadam.
