Sthala varalaru: the temple's story
Standing at the heart of town on the Kumbakonam-Thanjavur road, the temple's rajagopuram, the tallest in Kumbakonam, can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. Enter from the east and you pass through a hundred-pillared hall to find a stone chariot, great carved wheels and all, drawn by horses and elephants: this is the sanctum. Inside, Perumal reclines with his head on his right hand, yet not fully lying down; the half-risen pose is called Uttana Sayanam. Brahma sits at his navel and Surya near his head, and Narasimha carvings run round the sanctum walls. Where Vishnu usually holds only the conch and discus, here he also carries the bow Sharanga, hence the name Sarangapani; the Alvars called him Aravamudhan, the nectar one never tires of.
The temple legend goes like this. Sent to test which of the three gods was most patient, the sage Bhrigu kicked Vishnu on the chest in Vaikuntha. Lakshmi, who dwells on that chest, could not bear it and left her husband. The sage, sorry for his offence, was born again as Hema Rishi and did penance to raise the goddess herself as his daughter. "On the Kaveri bank, in the Potramarai tank, she sits on a thousand-petalled lotus as Komalavalli," Vishnu told him; "go and take her as your child." The sage found and raised her, and on the first day of Thai, at noon, Vishnu came straight down from Vaikuntha in a chariot, bow in hand, to marry her. Before the wedding he playfully hid underground, the spot now the Pathala Srinivasar shrine; after it he sat with his consorts on raised ground, the Mettu Srinivasar shrine. Since this is the goddess's birthplace and Perumal is the son-in-law living with her family, Thayar comes first: the morning cow puja is done before Komalavalli's shrine first, and the temple is laid out so you see her before you reach him.
There is more that is unusual. The sanctum has two stepped entrances, the Uttarayana and Dakshinayana gates; the first is open from Thai to Aani and the second from Aadi to Margazhi. Because the Lord came directly from Vaikuntha, there is no separate Paramapada Vasal here: passing through these gates counts for it. The festival image receives every honour given to the main image, which makes this an Ubhaya Pradhana Divya Desam. Santhana Krishnan stands before the sanctum, and kummayam, made of moong dal, jaggery and ghee, is this Lord's own offering.
Lakshmi Narayana Swami, a childless devotee who built the rajagopuram, served this Lord all his life. When he died on a Deepavali day there was no son to perform his last rites, and the next morning the priests found Perumal in a wet veshti with a fresh sacred thread and darbha grass, having done the duty himself as the son. Every Deepavali at the noon puja the Lord still performs the devotee's annual rite, out of the public's sight. Outside the west gate lies the Potramarai tank with the Hemarishi Mandapam at its centre, close to the Adi Kumbeswarar temple and the Mahamaham tank.

Meaning: O nectar I can never have enough of! Lord, tall and great, you melt me until my body, in its love for you, flows and dissolves like water. In Thirukkudanthai, rich with water, where ripe paddy sways like fans, I have seen you lying in your beautiful form, my Lord.

A Vaishnava settlement stood here by the 7th or 8th century. Seven Alvars, Bhoothathalvar, Peyalvar, Thirumazhisai Alvar, Nammalvar, Periyalvar, Andal and Thirumangai Alvar, sang 51 verses to this Lord, making it the most widely sung shrine after Srirangam and Tirumala. The mandapam of the inner sanctum circuit is of the Pallava period. The earliest inscriptions come from the later Cholas, and the present stone sanctum was raised by Kulothunga III. From the 15th to the 17th century the Vijayanagara and Nayak rulers enlarged the temple: the second-circuit walls, the hundred-pillared hall and the Achyuta Bhupala mandapam are Nayak work, and the fine sculpture is Vijayanagara in style. Inscriptions record grants from the times of the Vijayanagara king Sadasiva Raya and Raghunatha Nayak of Thanjavur. A Vaishnava matha attached itself to the temple in the 1600s; the Vadakalai school still holds sway here, and the rituals follow the Pancharatra rules. The eleven-tiered rajagopuram, about 173 ft tall, carries the 108 karanas of Bharatanatyam in stone. Thirumangai Alvar's Thiruvezhukutrirukkai is a 'ratha bandham' verse whose numbers, laid out in order, form a chariot, and that chariot is painted in the temple. The twin chariots, whose bases alone weigh 300 tonnes each, are the largest in Tamil Nadu after those of Thiruvarur and Srivilliputhur; they stood idle for some years before being restored in 2007. Its most recent Maha Samprokshanam (reconsecration) took place on 13 July 2015, and the state endowments department runs it.
