Sthala varalaru: the temple's story
Walk in from Thirunindravur station and a tall Vijayanagara-era rajagopuram greets you. Beyond the bali peetam, flagstaff, Garuda shrine and the outer and inner halls, Bhaktavatsala Perumal stands facing east, about eleven feet tall, holding his five weapons, with Sridevi and Bhudevi at his sides. The festival image is Bhaktharavi Perumal. The goddess, Ennai Petra Thayar or Sudhavalli, has her own shrine on his right, and the tower over the sanctum is of the Utpala kind.
The temple legend goes like this. Hurt by something Vishnu had done, Mahalakshmi left Vaikuntha and came to stand at this spot, and so it became Thiru-nindra-oor, the place where Lakshmi stood. Born from the Milky Ocean, she was the daughter of the ocean king Samudraraja, who hurried here to coax her home; she would not move. He went to Vaikuntha and pleaded with Vishnu, who told him, "Go ahead; I will follow." Back before her, Samudraraja folded his hands: "I am not your father; you are the mother who bore me. Come back and rule Vaikuntha." Those words became her name. Vishnu followed and made peace with her, and stayed on here. Because he came running at his devotee's plea, he is Bhaktavatsala, the Lord who loves his devotees. Varuna and Samudraraja both had his darshan here, and Kubera, having lost his wealth, won it back by worshipping this Thayar, which is why she is honoured as Vaibhava Lakshmi, giver of every good thing.
The Alvar's story is even better. Thirumangai Alvar, singing his way through the Divya Desams, passed through here without a single verse. The Thayar sent Perumal after him at once to fetch a pasuram. By then the Alvar had reached Thirukkadalmallai at Mamallapuram, and there, in his decade on Sthalasayana Perumal, he gave the visiting Lord a line: "Nindravur Nithilathai", the pearl of Nindravur. When Perumal came home with it, the Thayar asked, "Every other temple has ten songs, and we get one?" So off he went again. This time the Alvar was at Thirukkannamangai near Thiruvarur, and in the middle of singing there he caught sight of the Thirunindravur Lord standing by and worked him in too: "the cluster of pearls who stands at Nindravur". Those are the two pasurams that belong to Thirunindravur.
Around the prakaram are shrines of Andal, Chakrathalvar, Vishvaksena, the twelve Alvars, Ramanuja and Hanuman, and, unusually, one of Adisesha. Just behind, by the lakeside, Rama has a small temple of his own as Eri Katha Ramar, "the Rama who saved the lake"; look there for Hanuman bearing both brothers aloft on his shoulders. The temple tank is the Varuna Pushkarani and the sacred tree the parijatham.

Meaning: Do not waste your life carrying useless burdens, bowing in service to others and reciting false books as true; come. Here is my father, the Lord I worship, praised by hosts, dark like a rain cloud, our Lord, the pearl of Nindravur, who set the grove-filled Kandava forest ablaze. It was at Kadalmallai, at Thalasayanam, that I saw him.

The temple dates from the Pallava period of the 9th century. Its oldest inscription is of the Pallava king Nripatungavarman (820-890 CE). Pallava records call the town Ninravur and place it in Virudhurajabhayankara Chaturvedimangalam, a division of Punarkottam; Thinnanur is its old puranic name. Rajendra Chola II (1051-1063), Virarajendra (1063-1070) and Rajaraja II (1146-1173) left inscriptions later. The present rajagopuram is of the Vijayanagara period, and the temple has two prakarams. Worship follows Tenkalai custom and the Pancharatra rules. The state endowments department administers it, while the senior Jeeyar of Tirupati holds the post of hereditary trustee. There are six pujas a day.
Parikaram
Those facing obstacles to marriage come for darshan here. At the Adisesha shrine people offer an archana on Wednesdays with a ghee lamp and milk payasam, praying for relief from Rahu-Ketu and sarpa doshas and for a long married life. Since this Thayar restored Kubera's lost wealth, those who have suffered losses pray to her too. When a prayer is answered, devotees offer Perumal a new cloth. These are devotional customs, and no result is promised.
Parikaram is a traditional practice of worship, not a promise of results. Confirm the details at the temple.
