Sthala varalaru: the temple's story
Walk a few minutes from the Kanchipuram bus stand and the southern rajagopuram is already filling the sky ahead of you. Behind it the temple opens out into five prakarams of halls and corridors, and at the centre, in the sanctum, Ekambaranathar is a self-formed lingam of sand. The name joins "eka", one, and "amra", mango: the Lord of the single mango tree. The goddess here is Elavarkuzhali, whose festival image has a shrine of its own.
The temple legend goes like this. On Kailash, while Shiva sat in yoga, Parvati playfully put her hands over his eyes. In that instant the sun failed to rise, the planets stopped, and the whole world froze in darkness. When she begged forgiveness, Shiva told her that penance on earth would free her of the fault, and sent her to Kanchi. On the bank of the Vegavati, under a mango tree, she pressed sand into a lingam and stood among five fires to do her tapas. To test her, Shiva let loose the Ganga from his matted hair as a raging flood. Afraid the sand would dissolve, she clasped the lingam to her breast and held on. Shiva, melted by that love, appeared before her and married her, and so the Lord here is also Thazhuva Kuzhaintha Nathar, "the Lord who melted in her embrace". The mark of her embrace is still visible on the lingam.
Because the lingam is sand, it never receives abhishekam; the bathing rites are done to the pedestal (avudaiyar) alone. The lingam itself is anointed with civet and perfumes and covered with a silver kavacham. On Ratha Saptami in Thai, sunlight reaches the lingam directly.
The sacred mango tree stands in the prakaram behind the sanctum and is about 3,500 years old. Its four branches are honoured as the four Vedas, and it bears mangoes of four tastes: sweet, sour, astringent and pungent, which is why it is also called the Veda mango. Beneath it sit Shiva and the goddess as Somaskanda in their wedding form, her head bowed shyly as she turns toward him.
There is much else to look for. Facing the sanctum in the prakaram is a crystal (spatika) lingam facing west, with a crystal Nandi before it. The processional Ekambareswarar sits in a mirrored room under a canopy of 5,008 rudraksha beads, his image repeating endlessly in the glass. There is a Sahasralingam worshipped by Rama and a set of 108 lingams, before which devotees light 108 lamps. The Ganesha is Vikata Chakra Vinayagar and the Murugan is Mavadi Kandar. And, rarely for a Shiva temple, Vishnu has a home in the inner courtyard: Nilathingal Thundathan's shrine is counted among the Vaishnava 108.
The saint Sundarar's story belongs here too. At Thiruvottriyur he had married Sangiliyar, swearing before a magizham tree never to leave her. He broke that vow and set off for Thiruvarur, and lost his sight. Given a walking staff at Thiruvenpakkam, he made his way to Kanchi, sang here, and the sight of his left eye came back; the right eye was restored later at Thiruvarur. Kachiyappa Sivachariyar composed the Kandha Puranam at this temple and first recited it at the nearby Kumarakottam.
The temple tank is Sivaganga and the sacred tree is the mango.

Meaning: The Lord his devotees trust and long for; with a single glance for an arrow he set the three cities burning in terror; he is nectar, and a river of grace; he is Kamban, who dwells at Ekambam in Kachi among its lovely groves; the God who wears the bright white crescent on his red matted hair; he glows like red gold, like a pillar of coral. The more I think of him, the more my heart rises.

History and architecture
Worship here goes back to the Pallava period, to at least 600 CE. Inscriptions found in the complex are older than the Kailasanathar temple of Narasimhavarman II, which points to an earlier brick shrine on the site. In the Thevaram age Sambandar, Appar and Sundarar all sang here, and Manikkavasagar praised it too; it heads the list of Thevaram temples in Thondai Nadu. Appar called Kanchi "the great city of boundless learning". The Nayanmars Thirukurippu Thondar, Aiyadigal Kadavarkon and Kazharsingar were born in the town, and Sakkiya Nayanar attained liberation here.
The later Cholas pulled down the old structure and rebuilt it, and inscriptions of Uttama Chola, Rajaraja, Rajadhiraja and Kulothunga survive; Uttama Chola's names his queen Viraraniyar. A hundred-pillared Chola hall was enlarged under Vijayanagara into the present thousand-pillared mandapam of the fourth prakaram, known for its fine carving. The southern rajagopuram, about 59 m (roughly 192 ft) high and among the tallest in India, was built by the Vijayanagara king Krishnadevaraya. Later records include those of Vijayakanda Gopala and Sadasiva Raya of Vijayanagara. The complex covers about 23 acres.
After a long round of renovation the kumbhabhishekam was held on 8 December 2025, seventeen years after the previous one. The temple is administered by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.

Because the goddess's prayer was answered here, people come to pray for marriage and for children, and many couples choose to marry at the temple. Those hoping for a child eat a fruit of the sacred mango. Devotees also pray for forgiveness of unknowing wrongs and for peace of mind, and, since Sundarar regained his sight here, for the eyes. Customary offerings are a veshti and saree for the deities and annadanam. These are devotional customs, not a substitute for medical care.
