Sthala varalaru: the temple's story

From almost anywhere in north Tiruchi you can see the Rockfort. Climb its 417 steps up a rock about 273 feet high and you pass through a temple on three levels: Thayumanavar halfway up with the goddess Mattuvar Kuzhali in her own shrine, and Ucchi Pillaiyar on the summit. Thayumanavar's is the largest of the three. The Lord here is a large self-manifested linga that faces west. His Sanskrit name is Matrubhuteswarar, and over time he has been Malaikozhuntheesar, then Sevvanthinathar, and finally Thayumanavar. Locals will point out that, seen from different sides, the rock takes the shape of a Nandi, a lion and a seated Ganesha.

The temple legend goes like this. A merchant named Dhanagupta lived on the hill with his wife Rathnavathi, who was devoted to Sevvanthinathar. As her delivery drew near, she sent for her mother, who set out from Poompuhar with medicines and oils. The Kaveri was in spate, and the mother was stranded on the far bank. Labour began, and Rathnavathi, alone, cried out to the Lord. Her mother seemed to walk in at once, but it was Shiva in her form. He delivered a baby boy and cared for mother and child for the seven days the flood lasted. When the real mother finally arrived, the household found two identical mothers, and the Lord revealed himself with the Goddess. He who became a mother is Thayumanavar. The scene is re-enacted on the fifth day of the Chithirai Brahmotsavam as Chettippen Maruthuvam: an image of Rathnavathi is placed beside Somaskanda, a curtain is drawn, and when it opens a baby sits in her lap.

Why does the Lord face west? The sage Sarama kept a flower garden here and offered sevvanthi blooms every day, hence the name Sevvanthinathar. A trader kept stealing the flowers for the Chola king at Uraiyur, and the king would not punish him. The sage took his grievance to the Lord, who turned from east to west towards Uraiyur and rained earth upon the city. That is why the flagstaff stands behind the sanctum, on the east, and why the drums and Thevaram singing at worship still come from behind the shrine.

The hill and the town have their own origin story. In a contest between Adisesha and Vayu, Adisesha coiled round Mount Kailasa and dared Vayu to shake it loose. Vayu's gale tore away a small part, which fell to earth in three pieces: at Thirukalathi, at Trincomalee, and here as the Trisira hill. The three-headed asura Trisira later did penance on this hill; when Shiva did not appear he threw two of his heads into the fire and was about to cut off the third when the Lord stopped him. The place he worshipped became Trisirapuram.

Ucchi Pillaiyar has a separate story. After his coronation Rama gave Vibhishana an image of Ranganatha, which was never to touch the ground on the way to Lanka. The gods did not want it to leave and appealed to Ganesha. When Vibhishana stopped on the Kaveri bank for his evening rites, Ganesha appeared as a cowherd boy, was handed the image, and set it down while Vibhishana was in the water. Vibhishana chased the boy to the top of the rock and rapped him on the head, and Ganesha showed his true form. The spot where the image rests is Srirangam.

Inside, look for Gnana Dakshinamurthy seated on darbha grass above eight disciples (the four Sanakadi sages, Patanjali, Vyaghrapada, Thirumular and Sivayoga Munivar); Mahalakshmi and Durga carved in wood; an eight-armed Vishnu Durga; the conch-blowing Sangu Swami between the flagstaff and the altar; Pathala Ayyanar in a pit near the goddess's shrine; the Navagrahas all turned towards Surya and his consorts Usha and Pratyusha; and Manikka Vinayagar at the foot of the rock. There are also images of Jurakeswarar, Bhairava, Idumba, the four Saiva saints and the sixty-three Nayanmars. For three evenings in Panguni the setting sun falls on the linga. The sacred tree is the vilvam; the waters are the Brahma Theertham and the Kaveri.

Meaning: All that is good is his, and there is not a trace of evil in him. A single bull, white as milk, is his mount; Uma is one half of his body. His is a treasure no one can reach by their own effort, only by his grace. Whenever I speak of the Lord who lives on the rock of Sirappalli, my heart turns cool and calm.

The temple is about 1,400 years old. A cave shrine cut by the Pallava king Mahendravarman, on the way up to Ucchi Pillaiyar, shows worship here by the early seventh century. In the same century Sambandar sang the Lord in eleven verses (First Thirumurai) and his contemporary Appar in ten (Fifth Thirumurai). Later Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara rulers and Nayaks enlarged the temple, with stone brought from nearby Kodumbalur. Arunagirinathar later sang of its Muthukumaraswamy in the Thiruppugazh. Kediliyappa Pillai, an accountant to the local ruler Vijayaraghunatha Chokkar, named the son he was granted by this Lord after him; the young Thayumanavar served the temple for years and received teaching from the Lord as his guru, becoming the saint known by that name. Worship follows two Agamas, Karana and Kamika. The temple is run by the HR&CE Department.

Parikaram

Because the Lord himself stood in as a mother at a birth here, praying for expectant mothers is an old custom. Someone from the pregnant woman’s family offers Mattuvar Kuzhali 21 kozhukattai and 21 appam and an archanai with turmeric, kumkum and betel leaves tied in a cloth, and the temple gives out a sloka for safe delivery that expectant mothers recite three times a day. Couples hoping for a child, and families after a safe birth, offer milk abhishekam and a bunch of bananas to Thayumanavar, a wish that the family may grow like the banana plant, shoot after shoot. People who have lost their mother also come to pray to him as one. This is a practice of faith and is not a substitute for medical care.
