Sthala varalaru: the temple's story

Sikkal is on the Tiruvarur-Nagapattinam road, five kilometres before Nagapattinam. Its great temple belongs to Shiva as Navaneetheswarar, the Butter Lord, Vennaipiran in Tamil, with the Goddess Velnedunkanni. Yet the name Sikkal is known across Tamil Nadu because of Singaravelar, the Murugan who stands with his Vel in his own shrine inside the same complex, so revered that devotees call this an unofficial seventh Padai Veedu after the six abodes. Here the festival image itself is worshipped as the main deity. Vishnu is present too, as Kolavamana Perumal, with his own temple within the walls, and that coming together of Shaiva and Vaishnava worship is the mark of the place.

The temple legend goes like this. Long ago the land was a fragrant jasmine forest. Kamadhenu, the wish-giving cow, had eaten meat and been cursed by Shiva, and at his word she bathed in the pond here and was freed of her sin. In gratitude she poured out milk until the pond was full: the Parkulam, the milk tank. The sage Vasishta, doing penance in an ashram nearby, gathered the butter floating on its surface, shaped it into a lingam and worshipped it. When the rite was over he tried to lift it and set it somewhere else, but the lingam would not move; it had stuck fast and turned to stone. As Manikkavasagar sang, "I have caught hold of him tight", and the Lord was caught here for good. That is how the village came to be called Sikkal and the Lord Vennaipiran.

Murugan's story begins here as well. Setting out to defeat Surapadman, he received the Shakti Vel from his mother Parvati at Sikkal, then made camp at Tiruchendur and fought the battle there. So on the fifth night of Kanda Sashti, the eve of the Soorasamharam, Sikkal holds its Vel-receiving ceremony, and crowds come to see beads of sweat break out on Singaravelar's image as he takes the Vel from his mother. Arunagirinathar sang to this Murugan in the Thiruppugazh.

A sculptor's story is told about the image. The Murugans of Sikkal, Ettukudi and Enkan are all the work of one man. When the Sikkal Murugan was done, the craftsman was so overwhelmed that he chopped off his own right thumb, vowing that nothing like it would ever leave his hands again. Murugan came to him in a dream, and he carved the Ettukudi image anyway, then blinded himself. After a third dream he began, with his daughter's help, a Murugan seated on the peacock. One day his chisel slipped and cut the girl; her blood splashed into his eyes and his sight came back, and the village was named Enkan, "my eye".

In his hymn, Thirugnanasambandar praises the deities by name and not only the place: Vennaip Piran and Velnedunkanni. The Parkulam lies behind the temple, to the west, and is also called the Ksheera Pushkarini. The sacred plant is jasmine, and in memory of the old jasmine forest a jasmine creeper still grows in the southern part of the inner prakaram, near Dakshinamurti.

Meaning: In Sikkal, with walls and mansions so tall that the roaming moon brushes them, and flower groves overflowing with honey, dwells Vennai Perumaan, the Lord of butter, who burned the god of love with his forehead eye. Sambandar says that the karma of those who think of his feet with true understanding wears away.

History and architecture

The Chola king Kochengat Chola, who lived before the 4th century CE, built seventy temples for Shiva, and Sikkal is one of them. Of the three kinds of foundation, by gods, by sages and by men, this is a Rishi Pratishtha temple, its lingam set up by Vasishta. In the 7th century Thirugnanasambandar sang a pathigam here, which places Sikkal among the Thevaram shrines of the Chola country south of the Kaveri. Arunagirinathar later praised its Murugan in the Thiruppugazh. A second version of the sculptor's tale blames a Chola ruler, Mutharasan: he ordered the thumb severed and later the eyes blinded, and only on seeing the third Murugan did he understand what he had done and ask forgiveness. The temple is administered today by the HR&CE Department.
