Sthala varalaru: the temple's story

Vedaranyam sits on the Bay of Bengal, about forty kilometres south of Nagapattinam. Marai is the Veda and kadu a forest, so Maraikadu, Vedavanam and Vedaranyam all mean the same thing: the forest of the Vedas. Five-tiered rajagopurams stand on the east and the west, with three prakarams inside. In the east-facing sanctum Vedaranyeswarar, also called Thirumaraikadar, is a self-manifested granite lingam, and behind it a sculpture shows the Lord and the goddess as bride and groom, which is why he is also Maraikatturaiyum Manalar, "the bridegroom who dwells in Maraikadu". The goddess is Vedanayaki, in Tamil Yazhai Pazhitha Mozhiyal, "she whose voice puts the yazh to shame". The Lord, the goddess and Vinayagar each have a flagstaff of their own. In this seaside town the house wells give salty water, but the temple's water is sweet, and the whole town draws its drinking water here.

The temple legend goes like this. The four Vedas took human form and lived in nearby Naluvedhapathi. Each day they gathered flowers at Pushpavanam, bathed in the Vedamirtha lake north of the town and in the temple's Manikarnika, and entered by the eastern door to worship. When the Kali Yuga dawned they told the Lord their work on earth was done, bolted the main door and left. From then on people came in through a small side door. One day Appar and Sambandar arrived together and asked why the great door stayed shut. Sambandar begged Appar to sing it open, and when Appar had finished ten verses beginning "Pannin ner mozhiyal", the door swung open. Once they had worshipped, it was Sambandar's turn: his pathigam, opening with "Sathuram maraithan", brought the door shut once more. Here Sanskrit Veda and Tamil hymn proved equal before God. While the two saints were still here, word came asking Sambandar to go to Madurai and heal its ailing king, Koon Pandiyan. Appar warned him that the planets stood against the journey, and Sambandar answered with the Kolaru Pathigam, the hymn declaring that no planet can harm a devotee of Shiva.

The Lord's bridal form has its own story. When gods and sages crowded the north to watch the wedding of Shiva and Parvati, the north sank and the south rose, and the Lord sent Agastya south to restore the balance. The sage asked whether he alone was to miss the wedding, and the Lord promised to show it to him in Vedavanam. Agastya waited in penance at the place now called Agasthiyanpalli, and at noon on the waxing Saptami of Chithirai the Lord appeared to him as bridegroom. A wedding festival recalls it every Chithirai, and the nine Navagrahas here stand in a single row, all facing one way, so as to watch the wedding.

Vedaranyam is one of the Saptha Vidanga temples. Of the seven Vidanga images Indra gave King Muchukunda for fighting on the gods' side in their war, the emerald lingam rests here in the Thyagesar shrine, with pujas morning and evening, and the Vidangar's dance here is the Hamsa Natanam. "Vedaranyam vilakkazhagu", the old saying goes, Vedaranyam for its lamps, and the evening worship with row upon row of hanging lamps lives up to it. Behind the lamps is a story: a rat creeping up to drink the ghee of a dying lamp in the sanctum tugged the wick, and the flame leapt bright. The Lord made that rat the emperor Mahabali in its next birth. Since the goddess's voice is sweeter than Saraswati's veena, Saraswati here holds no veena but a palm-leaf book, seated in penance. There is a Vishnu Durga installed and worshipped by Rama, and a south-facing Durga who stands smiling in the thribhanga pose. When Rama came here to shed the sin of the Lanka war, the Vinayagar at the west gopuram lifted one foot and kicked away the Veerahathi spirit that pursued him, and he is Veerahathi Vinayagar; Rama's footprints are honoured nearby at Ramar Padam. Images of all seventy-three saints, the sixty-three Nayanmars and the ten Thogai Adiyars, stand here, and among the Shakti Peethams this is the Sundari Peetham.

The temple tree is the vanni, and the vanni here bears long, thorny pods on one side and round, smooth ones on the other; the punnai is also a temple tree. The sacred waters are the Manikarnika inside the temple and the Veda Theertham, the sea itself.

Meaning: O Lord who dwells in Maraikkadu, ringed by sweet groves, whom the four Vedas praise and bow to: I ask this so that your temple doors may once more be shut in sacred keeping; give me a clear answer, in your grace. The temple doors closed as this hymn was sung.

One from the reign of his son Parantaka records a merchant's gift of 90 sheep to keep a lamp burning forever, and grants under Rajaraja I, Rajendra I and Kulothunga I follow. Royal support continued after the Cholas under the Nayaks. The poet of the Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam, Paranjothi Munivar, was a son of this town. Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar all sang the temple; Sundarar came here with Cheraman Perumal Nayanar, and Arunagirinathar sang Thiruppugazh verses on it. Six pujas a day follow the Kamika agama, and the HR&CE Department runs the temple.

Devotees pray here to be cleansed of their sins and freed of naga dosham. A dip in the Manikarnika inside the temple is held to equal bathing in the Ganga, Yamuna, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri, and one bath in Adi Sethu, the sea east of the town, to equal a hundred at Rameswaram. On the new-moon days of Thai, Aadi and Mahalaya, people bathe in turn at Adi Sethu off Kodiyakarai, the Vedaranyam sea and the Manikarnika, then worship the Lord and goddess in their bridal form, praying for marriage, a child, learning, prosperity and health. As the birthplace of the Kolaru Pathigam, the temple also draws people troubled by planetary doshams. These are matters of faith, and no result is promised; take care with waves and currents when bathing in the sea.
