Sthala varalaru: the temple's story
Thirucherai is 14 km south of Kumbakonam on the road to Kudavasal, four kilometres short of that town. Through the five-tiered rajagopuram, the sanctum holds Saraparameswarar, a self-manifested lingam. His older name is Senneriappar, "the Lord of the right path", the one who sets a life on its true course. Because the village also has the Divya Desam of Saranatha Perumal, the Shiva here came to share the name and be called Saraparameswarar. Gnanambikai, also called Gnanavalli, has her shrine in the outer prakaram, to the left of the main sanctum.
The temple legend goes like this. The sage Markandeya was born carrying a heavy load of karma from past lives, and no amount of good deeds seemed to lighten it. He went from temple to temple, and only when he prayed at Thirucherai did he feel the weight lift. In gratitude he installed a lingam of his own beside the Vinayagar shrine, and the sage Dhaumya later worshipped it too. Karma is a kind of debt, so the lingam became Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar, the Lord who frees one from debt: runam is debt and vimochanam release. The Sun has a story here as well. Having gone to Daksha's sacrifice, Surya came to Thirucherai to beg Shiva's pardon, and his worship goes on to this day: on the 13th, 14th and 15th of Masi the morning rays fall straight on the lingam and at the goddess's feet.
The western prakaram holds, one after another, the Sthala Vinayagar, Markandeya, Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar and Balasubramaniar. A Shiva temple usually has a single Durga; here a single shrine holds three of them, the Durga of Shiva, Vaishnavi and the Durga of Vishnu. The Bhairava near the Nataraja shrine carries, in his upper left hand, a trident with a bell hanging from it, a form seen nowhere else, and Appar sang a hymn to this Bhairava alone, which no other Shiva temple can claim. The inner prakaram also has Vinayagar, Nataraja, Idabaroodar, Dakshinamurthy, Kalabhairava, Durga, Surya, Shani and the Navagraha. Thirugnanasambandar and Appar both sang of the temple, one of the Thevaram shrines on the south bank of the Kaveri.
The temple tree, the mavilangai, spends four months of the year in leaf, four white with blossom and four bare of both. The sacred tanks are the Bindu Sudha, Markandeya and Gnana Theerthams.

Meaning: He pressed his lotus foot down on the one who seized and lifted the great, firm-set mountain, until that one suffered, and then drew the foot back; the one who lifted it was Ravana. Appar says that those who speak of that radiant Lord, who chose to dwell at Senneri, the shrine in lovely Cherai, know no affliction.

The sanctum is very old, and the present stone temple was built under Kulothunga Chola I. Chola inscriptions on the walls of the maha mandapam call the Lord "Thiruchenneri Udaiyar". The assembly of Rajasundari Chaturvedimangalam gave tax-free land to hold a festival on Chithirai Swathi, with a sacred bath in the Rajanarayana Peraru. When owners abandoned their fields because they could not pay the tax, the assembly sold that land to the temple and paid the tax to the state. The assembly of Thiruvisalur bought land for the goddess, and twenty-five coins were given to keep a lamp burning day and night. The five-tiered rajagopuram and a three-tiered second tower are later additions. Major renovation work was under way in 2017. The HR&CE Department runs the temple.

Those hoping to ease a burden of debt offer archana to Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar on eleven Mondays in a row and an abhishekam on the eleventh; on some Mondays as many as three thousand archanas are booked. The three Durgas are worshipped during Rahu Kalam on Fridays. On Ashtami devotees offer Bhairava a garland of vadai with a sahasranama archana, praying for success in their work, in court cases and against Navagraha doshams. People also come to pray for relief from illness. When a prayer is answered they offer an abhishekam and a new vastram, and those who can afford it sponsor a meal or contribute to the temple's upkeep. These are acts of worship, not a promise of any result, and debt also needs sound financial advice and lawful steps of its own.
