Sthala varalaru: the temple's story
The temple fills some forty acres in the middle of town, with a tall gopuram on each of its four sides, and whichever gate you use you end up walking towards the golden hall. There, under a gilded roof, Nataraja dances with his left foot raised, Sivakama Sundari beside him. Many visitors never learn that he is not the moolavar. That is Thirumoolanathar, a self-formed lingam in a shrine of his own on the western side.
The temple legend goes like this. A young sage, Madhyandina, worshipped the lingam in the Thillai forest every day and was always short of good flowers: picked after dawn they had been robbed of their nectar by bees, and before dawn he could not see them. Shiva gave him eyes that saw in the dark and a tiger's feet that would not slip on a tree trunk, and from then on he was Vyaghrapada, the tiger-footed sage. Adisesha, the serpent who bears Vishnu, longed to see Shiva dance, and came to Thillai as the sage Patanjali to do penance. At noon on Poosam day in the month of Thai, with the three thousand Thillai sages gathered round, Shiva rewarded them both with the Ananda Tandava.
Shiva is worshipped here in three ways: as the image of Nataraja, as a crystal lingam that is both form and formless, and as pure space. To the right of Nataraja in the Chit Sabha is a small doorway. When its curtain is drawn back for the lamp, there is no image inside, only a garland of golden vilva leaves. Space has no beginning and no end, and that is the Chidambara Rahasyam, the secret of Chidambaram. The name itself joins "chit", awareness, and "ambaram", open space.
The golden hall is laid out like a human body. Its roof has 21,600 gold tiles, the number of breaths a person takes in a day, held by 72,000 nails for the body's nadis, and five steps lead up to it for the five syllables of "Sivayanama". No other temple has all five of Shiva's sabhas on one site: the Chit Sabha, the Kanaka Sabha, the Perambalam, the Nritta Sabha and the thousand-pillared Raja Sabha. The east and west gopurams carry all 108 karanas of Bharatanatyam in stone. Close to Nataraja lies Govindaraja Perumal, a Divya Desam in his own right, so you can stand in one place and see both Shiva and Vishnu. Twice a year Nataraja himself, not a festival image, rides out in the temple car, something seen nowhere else.
The sacred tree is the thillai, which no longer grows in town but crowds the Pichavaram backwaters to the east. The main tank is the Sivaganga.

Meaning: He carries the dark stain of the poison on his throat; he is Lord of all the worlds, a wish-granting tree that gives whatever is asked; he brought down the three warring forts with his arrow; he dances in beauty while the red fire in his hand blazes and roars; he is the Lord of Thillai, who performs his great dance in the Chitrambalam. I will sing his praise and hail him as king of the gods.

The Cholas took Nataraja as their family deity, and copper-plate grants record that Parantaka I, in the tenth century, gilded the roof of the Chit Sabha. Appar, Sambandar, Sundarar and Manikkavasagar all sang of the temple. Generations later the palm-leaf manuscripts of the first three were found near the golden hall, buried in a termite mound, and Nambiyandar Nambi with the king known as Thirumurai Kanda Cholan rescued what survived. The Thevaram sung today comes from that find. In the twelfth century Sekkizhar first recited his Periya Puranam in the thousand-pillared hall here; his account of Nandanar, who walked into the fire to reach the Lord, is set in Chidambaram. The Pandyas, the Vijayanagara kings and the Nayaks went on enlarging the temple, and the present Govindaraja shrine dates from 1539, under Achyutaraya. Arunagirinathar wrote ten Thiruppugazh songs on its Murugan. The Podhu Dikshitars, heirs of the Thillai Moovayiravar, have always run both worship and administration, and a 2014 Supreme Court ruling handed the management back to them.
Parikaram
People in mental turmoil come to Nataraja for peace, and dancers and musicians treat the temple as their own. Couples pray here for a child and families for prosperity. Common offerings are sponsoring the early-morning Thiruvananthal puja of milk, puffed rice and fruit, an abhishekam with a fresh cloth for the Lord, and a sari for the goddess. This is a matter of faith; health problems need a doctor first.
