Sthala varalaru: the temple's story
Leave the busy roads of north Chennai, pass under the seven-tiered rajagopuram, and an older world takes over. In the sanctum Adhipureeswarar is an anthill mound sheathed in armour. Facing him is the Nataraja shrine, where Thyagarajar is shown dancing while seated, a beautiful and unusual image; his steps match those of Thyagesar at Thiruvarur, and the dance is called the Padma dance. The goddess Vadivudaiamman, also called Tripurasundari, has her own shrine in the complex as the giver of wisdom.
The temple legend goes like this. After the great deluge had drowned the world, Brahma asked Shiva to let creation begin again. Shiva raised a great heat and with it soaked up, "ottri", the flood waters, and that heat settled under a magizha tree as a self-made lingam. The town became Ottriyur, and the first lingam to appear after the deluge became Adhipureeswarar. Later the serpent Vasuki, initiated by the sage Upamanyu, worshipped here, and Shiva rose as an anthill and drew the snake into himself. So he is also Ottreesar and Padampakkanathar, and the serpent's outline can still be seen on the deity.
The Periya Puranam gives the name another origin. A king once sent round a palm-leaf order levying tax on every town, temple towns included. Without the king or his scribe knowing, a line appeared on the leaf: "this order excepting Ottriyur". The exempted town kept the name, and the Lord who wrote on the leaf became Ezhuththariyum Perumaan, "the Lord who knows letters".
Thiruvottiyur is a turning point in Sundarar's life. He married Sangiliyar here and swore before the magizha tree, the temple's sacred tree, that he would never leave her. When he broke the vow and crossed the town boundary, he lost his sight, and the episode is recalled every year at the Masi festival. This is also where a bitter wild sugarcane tasted sweet to the saint Pattinathar, who took it as a sign that this was his place and attained samadhi by the shore, where his shrine now stands. Kaliya Nayanar, one of the sixty-three Nayanmars, was born here.
The temple holds more wonders. All twenty-seven stars worshipped Shiva here and became lingams, so each star has a lingam of its own. Vattaparai Amman, a form of Kali once fierce enough to demand blood offerings, was calmed by Adi Shankara, who installed a chakra before her; Namboothiri families in his line still perform her puja, and an image of Shankara stands behind the main shrine. The Durga shrine on the north side is linked to Kannagi of the Silappathikaram. Gunalaya Vinayagar, Aruljothi Murugan, a Sahasralingam and Ekapadar are among the many other shrines. Devotees say every stone lying here is a lingam and every speck of dust sacred ash. Outside the temple is the large Brahma Theertham tank, and devotees hold that even a sprinkling of its water on the head washes away sin.

History and architecture
The temple was already in worship under the Pallavas in the 7th century, and it holds many inscriptions from that time. Sambandar, Appar and Sundarar all sang it, as did Aiyadigal Kadavarkon Nayanar. In the 9th century a monastery headed by Chaturanana Pandithar was attached to it. Its halls were classrooms for grammar, Panini, Somasiddhanta and Purva Mimamsa, and inscriptions record food and land for teachers and students. A record from the fifth year of Gandaraditya Chola (954 CE) gives ninety sheep to keep lamps burning. In the 11th century Rajendra Chola I rebuilt and enlarged the temple, as he did the one at Thiruvarur, and in 1046 CE bronze images of the sixty-four Nayanmars were set up. When Malik Kafur's army came through, it wrecked a large part of the temple; the bronze images worshipped now were made afresh in Vijayanagara times, in the 15th century. In the 19th century the young Vallalar came here daily and sang many verses to its Lord, and the Carnatic composer Tyagaraja visited and composed the Thiruvottiyur Pancharatnam, five kritis on Vadivudaiamman. The goddess is one of the three Shakti shrines of Thondai Nadu, with Thiruvudai Amman at Minjur and Kodiyidai Amman at Thirumullaivoyal. The HR&CE Department runs the temple today.
Parikaram
Devotees look for the lingam of their own birth star and worship it, praying for relief from whatever troubles that star. Students and parents come to Vadivudaiamman, the goddess of wisdom, for learning and a clear mind. The usual thanksgiving is an abhishekam and a new cloth for the Lord and the goddess. These are acts of devotion, and no result is promised.
Parikaram is a traditional practice of worship, not a promise of results. Confirm the details at the temple.
