Sthala varalaru: the temple's story
The town takes its name from the reddish hill that rises to its south-east: chemmai, red, and kodu, hill. About 650 feet high, the hill also goes by Nagamalai, Urasagiri and Deiva Thirumalai, and in the Thevaram the shrine is Thirukodimada Chenkundrur. The hill itself is treated as the lingam, so a large Nandi lies at its foot facing it. Eleven mandapams give climbers a place to rest on the way up, and those who cannot manage the steps can drive to the top. On the summit a five-tiered rajagopuram stands on the north side.
The sanctum faces west but is entered from the south. In it stands Mathorubagan, about six feet tall, the right half Shiva and the left half the Goddess. The image was never touched by a chisel and is of navapashanam, and a spring seeps from beneath its feet, the Deva Theertham. The Goddess here is Bagampiriyal. Behind the sanctum, on a level stretch of the hilltop, is the shrine of Chenkottu Velavar, with finely carved sculpture in the hall before it, and Adikesava Perumal with Sridevi and Bhudevi is in the same complex. There are images of the sage Bhringi and of Arunagirinathar inside the temple.
The temple legend goes like this: Shiva and Uma sat together on Kailasa. Brahma and Indra bowed first to the Goddess and then to the Lord, but the sage Bhringi ignored her completely; he became a bee, slipped between them and circled Shiva alone. Angry, Parvati cursed him to lose his strength, and the flesh wasted from his body until he could not stand, so Shiva gave him a third leg to stand on. Still the Goddess was not at peace: no one must ever again see her as separate from Shiva. On this hill Adikesava Perumal taught her the Kedara Gowri vow, and she kept it and did penance. Declaring that without Shakti there is no Shiva, the Lord gave her his left side, the side of the heart, and that united form is the one in the sanctum. The emerald lingam she worshipped as Kedara Gowri is still kept in the temple.
The hill has its own origin story. Adisesha and Vayu quarrelled over who was the stronger. The test was that Adisesha would grip Mount Meru with his hoods and Vayu would try to break his hold. Adisesha held firm, so Vayu in a rage stopped the air of the world and living things fainted. When the sages persuaded him to relent he let go all at once, and the force tore the peak of Meru away with Adisesha's head, flinging it to earth in three pieces; one fell here and became this red hill. Hence the name Nagamalai, and hence the five-hooded serpent 60 feet long carved in the rock beside the steps. Next to it is the sixtieth step, the oldest on the hill, where people of the area have long settled disputes by swearing an oath.
More stories cling to the hill. When Sambandar came here on his Kongu pilgrimage and his companions fell ill with a shivering fever, he sang the Thiruneelakanda pathigam, beginning "Avvinaikku ivvinai", and cured them. Chenkottu Velavar once came as a cowherd boy for a poet named Gunaseelar, and Arunagirinathar sang the Velavar in the Thiruppugazh. Viranminda Nayanar was born in this town. The sacred tree is the iluppai, opposite the Sahasralinga shrine, and the night-time Arthajama puja and new-moon days are special here.

The hill temple's origins are put at about two thousand years ago, though no record fixes the date of building. Ilango Adigal names the place Chenkodu in the Silappadikaram, and Sambandar's 7th-century hymns make it one of the seven Thevaram shrines of the Kongu country. Inscriptions record works from the reigns of Parantaka Chola and Gangaikonda Chola through the Pandyas, Karnataka kings, Vijayanagara and the Nayaks to the Kangeyars of Moorur. The old walls, mandapams and carved pillars on the summit are Vijayanagara work. The north-facing rajagopuram, 84.5 feet tall, was built by Krishnadevaraya in 1512, its stone base under Sadasiva Raya. In 1628 Chennaraja Chikendar gave the chariot of Chenkottu Velavar and Kondabhupathi, ruler of the Kongu country, the other two chariots; in 1699 Nagamalai Gounder gave the great chariot of Arthanareeswarar. A British officer named Davis also renovated the temple, and his image is in the Mukkoottu Vinayaka shrine. More than twenty works, among them the Tiruchengode Puranam and the Thiruppani Malai, have been written on the temple, and Muthuswami Dikshitar's Arthanarishvaram in raga Kumudakriya praises its Lord. The motor road and the rajagopuram renovation are recent. The temple is run by the HR&CE Department.
Parikaram
This is above all the temple couples visit to pray for harmony in their marriage, and for that the Kedara Gowri vow is kept here for 21 days from the waxing-moon Ashtami of Purattasi. People troubled by naga, Rahu, kala sarpa or kalathra dosham worship the 60-foot serpent carved by the steps. About 425 feet further up the hill, west of the Ucchi Pillaiyar shrine, is a rock called Varadikal where couples hoping for a child pray. When prayers are answered, devotees offer abhishekam and new clothes to the Lord and the Goddess. Walking round the hill on a full-moon night is praised as equal to circling both Kailasa and Vaikuntam. These are acts of devotion; do not put off counselling or medical help that family troubles or fertility may need.
