What Karthigai Amavasai is known for
The new moon of Karthigai, with the sun in Viruchiga. It falls in the middle of the Sabarimala mandala fast, the dark night of the month of lamps, when a lamp lit at home in the evening suits the month well.
Like every Amavasai it is a day for tharpanam, offering sesame and water to the ancestors at a river, tank or the sea.
When Karthigai Amavasai falls
It is the Amavasai that falls in Karthigai, while the sun is in Viruchiga (Scorpio); this Karthigai runs from 17 Nov 2026 to 15 Dec 2026. The Tamil month follows the sun and the Amavasai the moon, so the two do not line up the same way every year: Karthigai 2028 has two.
