Date of death (2016 or later)

Before 2016? If you know the Tamil month and thithi

What is thevasam, and how is it worked out?

Thevasam (sraddham) is the yearly rite for a departed family member. It is kept not on the English date but in the Tamil month of death, on the thithi that ran at the time of death, so the English date moves every year.

The Tamil month of the day of death and the thithi running at the time of death (with its paksha) are noted. Each year, the thevasam is the day in that Tamil month on which the same thithi holds during aparahna, the fourth fifth of the daytime. If two days qualify, the one with the longer overlap; if the month holds the thithi twice, the first.

Frequently asked

What if the time of death is not known?

Without a time, the thithi at sunrise is used. On a day when the thithi changes, the time matters; confirm with your family priest.

For a death before 2016?

If you know the Tamil month and thithi, use the second option; the coming years' dates are shown.

Why can Vakya and Thirukanitha give different dates?

The thithi end time differs by up to a few hours between the methods, which can move the day it holds at aparahna. Follow your family's almanac.
