What is Somavara Amavasai?
An Amavasai that falls on a Monday, also called Ama Somavaram. The new-moon day for the ancestors' tharpanam meets Monday, Shiva's day. The rite that belongs to it is walking 108 times round the peepal (arasa maram) tree of a temple, in silence, in the morning; the peepal is the tree of the three gods, with Brahma at its root, Vishnu in its trunk and Shiva at its crown. It comes no more than three times a year, and some years have none. Only the days when the almanac's Amavasai, the tharpanam day, is a Monday are shown here.
What do you do on Somavara Amavasai?
Two rites mark the day. First the usual Amavasai tharpanam. Then a walk of 108 rounds, in silence, round the peepal tree of a temple, which women do for the well-being of the family and the children.
- Bathe and offer tharpanam to the ancestors with sesame and water
- Go early to a temple with a peepal tree
- 108 rounds of the peepal tree in silence
- Set down one item (a fruit, a sweet, a betel leaf) for each round, and give them away at the end
- Darshan at a Shiva temple
- One vegetarian meal after worship

- Black sesame and darbha for the tharpanam; 108 fruits, sweets or betel leaves to set down as you walk.
- Prayers
- Remember the ancestors by name; while walking, "Namasivaya" or the name of your family deity, silently.
- Avoid
- Meat and alcohol. No food before the tharpanam is done.
- Health
- If you are unwell, pregnant, elderly or diabetic, fast lightly or skip it, and follow your doctor.
