What is my birth star? Nakshatra and rasi finder

Give the date, time and place of birth. The birth star, its pada and the rasi follow, under both Vakya and Thirukanitha.

Birth details

Everything is worked out in your browser; birth details are never sent anywhere or stored.

How the birth star is worked out

The moon's path is divided into twenty-seven equal parts of 13° 20′, the nakshatras, and each into four padas of 3° 20′. The part the moon stood in at the minute of birth is your star and pada.

This page uses the same working as the Namma Calendar app. Vakya: the traditional vakya arithmetic the printed Tamil almanacs follow. Thirukanitha: the moon's true position with the Lahiri ayanamsa. The birth place's time zone on that date, old clock changes included, is taken into account.

When the birth falls within 90 minutes of a change of star, the page says so: a few minutes' error in the birth time could then change the star.

Frequently asked

How do I find my birth star?

Give the birth date, time and place. The star the moon held at that minute, its pada and the rasi are worked out, under both Vakya and Thirukanitha.

How does the rasi follow from the star?

Each star has four padas and each rasi nine, so nine stars such as Karthigai and Mirugasirisham are split across two rasis; for those, the pada decides the rasi.

What if the birth time is not known?

Tick "The time is not known". Every star the moon held between sunrise and sunset that day is listed with the time it begins. If there is more than one, ask your jothidar to confirm.

Why do Vakya and Thirukanitha give different stars?

Vakya is the printed almanacs' traditional arithmetic; Thirukanitha works from where the moon really was. Near the moment the star changes the two can differ, and this page says so when they do.

Is my birth data stored?

No. Everything is computed in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.
