Thirumana Porutham calculator
Choose the bride's and the groom's stars, or give their birth date, time and place. All ten poruthams follow, each with its working.
How this calculator works it out
These are the same porutham rules as the Namma Calendar app. The groom's star is counted from the bride's, and the rasi likewise; then gana, yoni, rajju, vedhai, nadi and the rest are read against the traditional tables. Under every porutham one line gives the working behind its verdict, for your jothidar to check.
With birth details, the star is worked out both ways: Vakya (the printed almanacs' traditional arithmetic) and Thirukanitha (the moon's true position, Lahiri ayanamsa). When they give different stars, both results are shown side by side.
If both share one rajju, the grade is adhamam whatever the count; and also if any of the five key poruthams (Dinam, Ganam, Yoni, Rasi, Rajju) is missing. That is the tradition's rule.
The ten poruthams: what each one checks
- DinamThe porutham that checks which count the groom's star falls on from the bride's; the tradition treats some counts as favourable and the rest as not. Checked for the couple's health and everyday well-being.
- GanamEvery star belongs to one of three ganas, Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa; the tradition grades how the two ganas sit together. Checked to see whether the two temperaments sit well together.
- MahendramThe porutham that checks whether the groom's star, counted from the bride's, falls on one of a fixed set of counts. Checked for the growth of the family and its children.
- Stree DeerghamThe porutham graded in three levels by how far the groom's star falls from the bride's, counted between them. Checked with the bride's long-term well-being and the household's prosperity in mind.
- YoniEvery star carries an animal the tradition assigns it; the porutham checks whether the two animals are the same, are enemies, or neither. Checked for the couple's physical and emotional closeness.
- RasiThe porutham that checks whether the groom's sign falls beyond the 6th, counted from the bride's; the same sign matches too; the 8th matches only when one planet rules both signs; and the tradition does not match a Kumbam bride with a Simmam groom, or a Magaram bride with a Kadagam groom. Checked for the continuation and welfare of the family line.
- Rasi AdhipathiThe porutham that checks whether the two signs' own ruling planets are friends, neutral, or enemies. Checked for friendship and understanding between the two signs.
- VasiyamThe porutham that checks whether the groom's sign is vasya (drawn) to the bride's, by the tradition's own fixed list for all twelve signs. Checked for mutual affection and attraction.
- RajjuAll 27 stars fall into one of five rajju groups; the porutham checks whether the two share a group; the tradition does not match stars from the same group. Checked for the steadiness of the married life; the tradition treats it as the most weighty of all.
- VedhaiThe tradition holds certain fixed pairs of stars to be vedhai (opposed) to each other, and Mirugasirisham, Chithirai and Avittam all three with one another, the same star included; the porutham checks whether the two are such a pair. Checked so that the two stars do not work against each other.
Nadi and Varnam are worked out too. Under the Tamil Nadu rule set they stay outside the count; the Sri Lankan Tamil rule set counts Nadi.
- NadiEvery star belongs to one of three nadis, Adi, Madhya or Antya; the porutham checks whether the two are different.
- VarnamThis comes from the rasi alone, one of four levels; the porutham checks whether the groom's level is equal to or higher than the bride's; this app never asks for, stores or infers caste or community.
Three rule sets
- Tamil Nadu: The ten-porutham system most families in Tamil Nadu follow.
- Kongu: The Kongu region's own reading, with seven poruthams only.
- Sri Lankan Tamil: The Sri Lankan Tamil reading, with Nadi added, eleven poruthams in all.
This is a guide computed by panchangam rules only; porutham rules vary a little between texts. Please consult your astrologer before any marriage decision.
Frequently asked
How is the marriage porutham worked out?
Both people's birth star and rasi are needed. The count of the groom's star from the bride's, the two ganas, yonis, rajju groups, rasi lords and so on are read against the traditional tables. Each porutham gets a verdict (undu or illai, or uthamam, madhyamam, adhamam). The grade comes from how many poruthams hold together with the five key ones.
How many poruthams make an uthamam match?
Under the Tamil Nadu rule set, eight or more of ten is uthamam and six or seven madhyamam, provided Dinam, Ganam, Yoni, Rasi and Rajju are all present. A shared rajju is adhamam whatever the count. Kongu: six of seven uthamam, four or five madhyamam. Sri Lankan Tamil: eight of eleven uthamam.
What if the birth time is not known?
Tick "The time is not known" and every star the moon held between sunrise and sunset that day is listed. If it is one star, that is taken. If there are two or more, you choose one; when in doubt, ask your jothidar.
Why can Vakya and Thirukanitha give different stars?
The two place the moon slightly differently. For a birth close to the moment the star changes, the two can give different stars, and the porutham can change with them. This calculator works out both and marks every porutham that differs.
Are my details stored anywhere?
