What is Soma Pradosham?
A Pradosham that falls on a Monday. Soma is the moon; Monday is the moon's day, and Shiva wears the crescent moon in his hair. The Monday fast for Shiva and the Pradosham fall together, which gives the day a special place in Shiva temples. It comes only one to five times a year. The pradosha kaalam shown here runs from sunset for 6 nazhigai (2 h 24 min).
How do you keep the Soma Pradosham fast?
Soma Pradosham is kept like any Pradosham: fast by day, watch the Nandi abhishekam in the evening, eat after worship. For those who keep the Monday (Somavara) fast it counts twice, with one meal, taken only after worship.
- Bathe, light the lamp and make the vow in the morning
- Fruit and milk through the day, or as much fast as your body allows
- The Nandi abhishekam at a Shiva temple in the evening
- Darshan of the lingam between Nandi's horns
- "Namasivaya" 108 times
- Break the fast after worship with a simple vegetarian meal
- Offerings
- Milk, curd, tender coconut water and honey for Nandi; bilva, white flowers and a ghee lamp for Shiva.
- Prayers
- Thevaram, Sivapuranam, Sri Rudram, the "Namasivaya" japam.
- Avoid
- Meat, alcohol, anger and quarrels. Do not walk across the line between Nandi and the lingam.
- Health
