What Aani Pournami is known for

In Karaikal, Aani Pournami means the Mangani (mango) festival. It recalls Karaikal Ammaiyar, the only woman among the sixty-three Nayanmars, serving curd rice and a mango to a hungry devotee of Shiva at her door. As the Lord is taken round the streets as Bikshadanar, mangoes are thrown down from the rooftops, and women hoping for a child catch them in the ends of their saris.

As on every full moon, people walk girivalam round Tiruvannamalai and other hills, and homes keep the Satyanarayana puja.

When Aani Pournami falls

It is the Pournami that falls in Aani, while the sun is in Mithuna (Gemini); this Aani runs from 16 Jun 2027 to 16 Jul 2027. The Tamil month follows the sun and the Pournami the moon, so the two do not line up the same way every year: Aani 2030 has two.
