Fire in a dream: what the old books say
On fire the two old books do not speak with one voice: Kana Nool v.21 reads seeing a fire burning as wealth, and Kanavu Nool v.24 reads even one's own house on fire as a life that prospers, but Kanavu Nool v.6 reads fierce flames closing in all round as not favourable.
Source: Kanavu Nool, Chennai 1880 (v.6, 20, 24, 26); Kana Nool, Madurai 1903 (v.21). In our own words
These are traditional beliefs from two old printed books, not predictions. The books sometimes give harsher readings than these, and we do not reproduce them. "Not favourable" here means only that tradition reads a minor setback.
Where the two books differ
One is watching a fire burn; the other is flames closing in around you. The books are not contradicting each other over exactly the same scene, but they do not speak with one voice under "fire", so we mark it "the books differ".
What the books say
Beside each line is the book, verse (v.) and page (p.): 1880 is the Kanavu Nool, 1903 the Kana Nool. Both labels together mean both books say it.
- Good by tradition Seeing a fire burning: Wealth comes 1903 v.21, p.6
- Good by tradition Seeing one's own house on fire: Life prospers, says the book 1880 v.24, p.7
- Good by tradition Seeing a lamp clearly: Wealth and overflowing plenty 1880 v.20, p.6 · 1880 v.26, p.7
- Not favourable Seeing smoke: Tradition reads a minor setback 1903 v.21, p.6
- Not favourable Fierce flames closing in all round: Tradition reads a minor setback 1880 v.6, p.3
What the books leave out
Neither book has being caught in a fire or putting one out. One's own house on fire comes only in Kanavu Nool v.24. The word for fire in the first verse of the Kanavu Nool ("vanni") can also mean a tree, so we have left that line out here.
Frequently asked
Is fire in a dream good or bad?
The two books do not agree. The Kana Nool reads seeing a fire burn as wealth; the Kanavu Nool reads one's own house on fire as good but flames closing in as not favourable. So we show this as "mixed" and "the books differ".
What does a house on fire in a dream mean?
Kanavu Nool v.24 reads seeing one's own house on fire as good: it says life will prosper. The Kana Nool does not have this scene. It is a traditional belief only.
