The dead in a dream: what the old books say

Neither old book has a single line about a dead relative appearing in a dream. They have one line about seeing a body: Kana Nool (1903) v.8 reads it as great wealth.

Source: Kana Nool, Madurai 1903 (v.8). In our own words

These are traditional beliefs from two old printed books, not predictions. The books sometimes give harsher readings than these, and we do not reproduce them. "Not favourable" here means only that tradition reads a minor setback.

What the books say

Beside each line is the book, verse (v.) and page (p.): 1880 is the Kanavu Nool, 1903 the Kana Nool. Both labels together mean both books say it.

  • Good by tradition Seeing a dead body: Great wealth, says the book 1903 v.8, p.4

What the books leave out

A dead grandparent or parent appearing, speaking, calling, or asking for food: none of it is in either book. So the readings widely quoted for this did not come from these texts, and we do not give them. The Kanavu Nool does have a separate line for ghosts and demons appearing (see "Ghosts and demons" in the list); those are not the dead.

Dreaming of someone you have lost is very human. If your heart feels heavy, talk to someone you trust, and if it goes on long enough to spoil your sleep, talk to a doctor as well.

Frequently asked

What does it mean if a dead person appears in a dream?

Neither the Kanavu Nool nor the Kana Nool gives a reading for this. Since neither has a line on a dead relative appearing, we say nothing about it.

What does seeing a corpse in a dream mean?

Kana Nool (1903) v.8 reads seeing a dead body as great wealth. It is the only line the books have, and a traditional belief only.

What if I am frightened after dreaming of someone who died?

There is nothing to fear; dreaming of someone you lost happens to many people, and the books give no reading for it. If your heart feels heavy, talk to people close to you, and if it spoils your sleep, talk to a doctor.
