A cow or bull in a dream: what the old books say

Both old books read seeing a cow or bull in a dream as good by tradition (Kanavu Nool v.20, Kana Nool v.3, 4, 23); only a cow or bull falling is read as not favourable, in Kanavu Nool v.30.

Source: Kanavu Nool, Chennai 1880 (v.14, 20, 30); Kana Nool, Madurai 1903 (v.3, 4, 18, 23). In our own words

These are traditional beliefs from two old printed books, not predictions. The books sometimes give harsher readings than these, and we do not reproduce them. "Not favourable" here means only that tradition reads a minor setback.

What the books say

Beside each line is the book, verse (v.) and page (p.): 1880 is the Kanavu Nool, 1903 the Kana Nool. Both labels together mean both books say it.

  • Good by tradition Seeing a cow or a bull: Wealth, a flourishing family, troubles ease 1880 v.20, p.6 · 1903 v.3, p.3
  • Good by tradition Mounting a cow or a bull: Well-being comes 1903 v.4, p.3
  • Good by tradition A cow giving milk: An exception to the "black things are not favourable" rule; it still reads well 1903 v.23, p.6
  • Good by tradition Receiving or eating milk, curd or ghee: Contentment, well-being, wealth 1880 v.14, p.5 · 1903 v.18, p.5
  • Not favourable A cow or bull falling down: Tradition reads a minor setback 1880 v.30, p.8

What the books leave out

Neither book has a calf, a cow chasing or goring, or milking a cow. For anyone searching for "maadu" in general: riding a buffalo appears in both books (Kanavu Nool v.12, Kana Nool v.15) and a horned buffalo biting in the Kanavu Nool (v.27); both sit in the not-favourable group.

Frequently asked

Is a cow in a dream good?

Yes, in both books. Seeing a cow or a bull reads as wealth and a flourishing family (Kanavu Nool v.20, Kana Nool v.3, 4, 23).

What if a cow or bull chases you in a dream?

The books have no line on being chased or gored, and we do not give a reading they do not.
