What is Angaraka Chathurthi?

A Sankatahara Chathurthi that falls on a Tuesday. Angarakan is the planet Mars. The Purana tells it this way: Angarakan, son of Bhoomi Devi and the sage Bharadwaja, did a long penance for Vinayagar on the banks of the Narmada. Vinayagar appeared to him on a waning Chathurthi that fell on a Tuesday, and Angarakan asked that the day carry his name; ever since, a Tuesday Sankatahara Chathurthi is Angaraka Chathurthi. It comes no more than three times a year, and some years have none, so Vinayagar temples are crowded that day.

How do you keep the Angaraka Chathurthi fast?

It is kept like any Sankatahara Chathurthi: fast from morning, worship Vinayagar in the evening, and eat only after you have seen the moon and worshipped it. Since it comes only a few times a year, even people who do not usually keep the Sankatahara fast keep this one.

  • Bathe in the morning and light a lamp for Vinayagar
  • Fast through the day as far as your body allows
  • An archanai and an arugampul garland at a Vinayagar temple in the evening
  • Worship the moon once it rises
  • Then break the fast with the prasadam

Meat and alcohol. No food before you see the moon.
