What is Panchami?

The fifth lunar day after Amavasai and after Pournami, twice a month. It is the day of Varahi Amman, one of the seven mothers (Saptha Kanni) and the commander of Lalithambikai's army. Devotees worship Varahi on the evening of both Panchamis. The Thanjavur Big Temple has a shrine of its own for Varahi. Naga Panchami is a waxing Panchami too, mostly in Aadi and in some years in Aavani. Each date here is the day the Panchami thithi holds at midday.

How do you worship Varahi on Panchami?

Panchami worship belongs to the evening. Those who keep it for Varahi fast by day, and after dusk light a lamp for her at home or at a Varahi shrine. Many keep it for five Panchamis running.

Bathe, light the lamp and make the vow in the morning
Fast through the day as far as your body allows
In the evening, a ghee lamp in a coconut half at a Varahi shrine
At home, sit facing north and worship Varahi in a clay lamp
The Varahi Gayatri or her moola mantra
Break the fast after worship with a simple meal

Offerings: Urad vadai made with the skin on, pepper vadai, pomegranate, sweet potato, curd rice.
Prayers: The Varahi Gayatri, the Varahi moola mantra.
Avoid: Meat, alcohol, anger and quarrels.
Health: If you are unwell, pregnant, elderly or diabetic, fast lightly or skip it, and follow your doctor.

Ashada Navarathri, in Aani – Aadi, belongs to Varahi; on each of its nine days the Varahi of the Thanjavur Big Temple wears a new alankaram. Where your family does it differently, follow your family.
